Apple says it's 10. It is, after all, version 10 of the Mac OS --
though that is an arbitrary designation. But they wrote it with an X in
a nod to UniX and perhaps NeXT.

For others, it is very frequently OS Ecks because Roman numerals are
not in wide use. For that reason, when we see a X we tend pronounce it
like the letter that it is, not like a number. I refer you to X-Plane,
X-Men, X-Files, X marks the spot, sign with an X (for persons unable to
write), et al.
