Several times in the last few days my PowerMac G5 OS X 10.5.2 has apparently
crashed during an extended period of inactivity, that is, when I tried to
use it again it was "frozen".
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.iokit.IOATABlockStorage(2.0.1)@0xd64000->0xd76fff
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.7.3f1)@0xd52000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily(1.5.2)@0xb9a000
My guess is this is disk or other ATA device problem.
Run Disk Utility and look at the SMART (I forget what that stands for, but
it is disks reporting their condition) status at the bottom of the window.
You have to select the physical device(s) to see this. That is, something
like 111.8GB ST3120213A, not MacintoshHD.
If you don't see "Failing" there, try turning off the "Put the hard disk(s)
to sleep when possible" option in the Energy Saver Preferences and see if
that solves the problem.
This might also be caused by something like a spun down optical drive that
had some kind of problem spinning back up.
