This may be potentially off-topic to this newsgroup but I couldn't find an
iTunes newsgroup. I have a couple of questions regarding iTunes (which I've
never used).
- What is the quality of the movies. DVD quality? Blu-ray quality?
Good temporal resolution but poor static resolution. 640x360 is typical.
That's only 2/3 the resolution of standard DVD. The one movie I
purchased was blurry and aliased on my 32" LCD TV.
- What is the average price of a movie download? Is it comparable to a DVD
purchase?
It varies. A used DVD is generally cheaper and has much higher quality.
- Once I download the movie, can I play it as many times as I want? Can I
burn it onto a DVD (or Blu-ray) disk and (legally) lend it out to friends,
the same way I lend out my current DVDs?
Purchased movies play by the same rules as DRM crippled music from
Apple. Only low-res movie rentals play in iTunes and they expire in one
day. Higher res movie rentals play for one day only on an Apple TV.
- What format are the movies in (or does iTunes support more than one
format)?
Encrypted MPEG4 container with low complexity AAC sound and low
complexity H.264 video. QuickTime doesn't support higher complexity
encodings like AVCHD. Rumor is that Steve Jobs won't improve QuickTime
because he thinks MPEG-LA charges too much.
