I have just recently installed Mac OS X Leopard on my Macbook Pro
after installing af new hard drive.
The installation of both the new hard drive and OS X Leopard worked
perfectly.
I created a new dummy-user in Leopard and connected my old hard drive
with my previous OS X Tiger-installation using an external hard drive-
casing (USB).
In the absence of other suggestions so far:
The dummy user you created will be the main admin user. Try using that
account to look at the accounts pref pane, see if the old user is an
admin account. It looks like there is something your account needs to
access after login which is either not there, there in some other form
than it is expecting, or it doesn't have the correct permissions for.
Also check the login items in that account: Start up in safe mode
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392 might be useful,
though it is for 10.4, I can't find anything for 10.5).
Safe mode will disable a lot of functions, and if you can log in
successfully that way it narrows the possibilities down a lot,
