I just ran the iDefrag program on my Santa Rosa MacBook (80 GB disk, 4 GB
memory).
It definitely improved the speed of the MacBook.
measured how?
With 4 GB of RAM, I suspected that the slowdown was due to fragmentation
caused by updating to OS X 10.5.2 and to SP1 for Vista.
suspected it, based on what?
Also, iDefrag reported less than 1% fragmentation before I defragged, but
the graphic display of the disk suggested considerably more fragmentation
than 1%.
so the drive was not fragmented before, therefore your speculation
about fragmenation being the cause was wrong. how do you explain the
difference in performance? and how did you measure it, or is it 'it
just seems faster' ? simply rebooting can do that.

My experience of both the slowdown and the improvement was subjective.
I suspected fragmentation as the cause of the slowdown due to my years of experience with computers.
Per the stat, the disk was not fragmented, and how they arrive at that stat I do not know.
Per the graph display of the fragmentation state, I felt the disk need to be defragged.
Free space was about 48% fragmented before I defragged, and it is now about 70 fragmented. If I had a disk larger than 80 GB defragging may not have been beneficial (I have about 30 GB free).
If you are one of the Mac users who feel the Mac does not require defragmentation, you may want to Google the concept as there are users who have found defragging beneficial.
