On PCs if some really bad crap happens one final resort is to revert
to a system restore point, like going back in time. Is there any
equivalent with Mac OS 10.4.x? I seem to have somehow lost all my
iPhoto library and haven't a clue. A Spotlight search turned up no
trace of my 1500+ photos. I have looked into some data recovery
software (StellarPhoenix) but before investing wanted to know if a
simpler, cheaper solution exists.

stellar phoenix is absolute garbage; there are far better tools
available, such as data rescue and disk warrior. also keep in mind
that spotlight doesn't search all folders and may not actually find
what you are looking for.

however, the most important thing is *not* to use that drive at all.
the more you use it the higher the chances that any deleted files will
be overwritten and no longer recoverable. if there is directory
corruption, you could make it worse and lose even more data.

your best bet is try data rescue from prosoft engineering. there's a
free demo that will show you what it can recover, and if it finds what
you want, then buy it.

Just a quick note. Not to argue but I downloaded trial versions of
both Stellar Phoenix and Prosoft's. I did scans using each. I could
see no way to preview what the jpg files were using Prosoft. In
contrast, with Stellar I could see that the files i lost were there
and recoverable. So I went with Stellar and have in about an hour
recovered more than 50% of the lost iPhoto files. So far, so good.
