Re: Auto Spam tagging in MTNW

I've been dutifully marking messages

number of spam messages that come in.

So, I trawl through the preferences again looking for something. Nada.

MT-NW's default behavior is to italicize junk posts. If the junk filter
recognizes a post as junk, it italicizes it in the article list.

You are expected to correct MT-NW by marking all false negatives as
Junk, and marking all false positives as Not Junk, using the Filters
menu or contextual menu. As you correct false matches, you should notice
MT-NW marking more and more junk posts correctly by italicizing the
message in the article list. It may take some time for MT-NW to become
very accurate - and depending on how the junk filter is implemented, it
may *never* become very accurate. Either way, in my mind, if the junk
filter hits even just 80% accuracy, it's helping, so it's worth the
trouble. : )

So I think, well, maybe I have to setup a filter. Ah, ok, bingo, sorta.
My options are to lower the score (which does nothing) or to kill the
articles, which seems risky. I DO NOT have the option to simply mark
junk messages as read, so they are still there if I need them, but
aren't going to show up on chunking through the group.

As you've seen, there is a "Highlight/Kill" if "Message is Junk" action
that you can use to highlight, kill, or apply a score to junk posts.

Here's how I have my filters set up. I have a junk filter that:

* highlights (pink background, red foreground) if the article is junk
* applies a score of -50

In MT-NW Preferences > Filters > I have "Kill articles with a score
below" checked and set to -35. I also have "Show killed articles"
checked in the same pane.

Also, even when you apply a color to a message, that color is not in
anyway shown in the actual message, its only in the article list, which
is normally UNDER the current message.

Yes. That's just the way MT-NW is designed. You might consider sending a
suggestion for improvement to Simon, the author:

How are other people managing their spam with MTNW?

It also appears that MTNW doesn't think "Hey, those 300 messages Lewis
just read and didn't mark as spam might not be spam" So I have like 300
spam learned, but only 70 'not spam'.

If I see a post that is not italic & highlighted in an article list, I
do a Filters > Mark as Junk on that post.

If I see a post that is italic & highlighted but should not be, I do a
Filters > Mark as Not Junk on that post.

For me, MT-NW does seem to be getting more accurate as time goes by.
