Vanishing email

Using 10.4.11 Mail. Often when I review older email (months old) I get
this message in italics:
"The message from Me <me@xxxxxxxxx> concerning ³Subject line of message²
has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account
online in order to download it."
Of course the message has vanished. I'm presuming its got something to
do with the email being cleared out on the mail server after having been
deleted. The odd thing is why isn't it still where I last left it?
