DT printers were easy to make under some earlier version, but that's
not
what I want; I was just curious about that.
You can have the same effect by opening the print queue for the desired
printer(s) and minimizing the window to the dock. Dragging a document
to the minimized icon will print the document on that printer.

I have what I thought was a Desktop Printer. It's an image of my Epson
740 and when you drop documents on it, it prints them. I generally
print from the print command in various apps but I do use it
occasionally when the app is not open. I just drop the doc on it and it
prints. I have this on my Panther drive as well so it must have been
copied over after I installed Leopard onto my second internal drive. I
hate sounding so stupid but is that not a Desktop Printer?

It surely sounds like it to me, but I don't know how to create such an
reference other than what I described above.

It sure meets my definition of a DT printer, but it's not what I want. I
always use Cmd-p, and I never want to print from Word or Safari to my
Photo printer, nor from my photo apps to my low end printer. I'd even be
willing to make those changes permanent and undoable (although nothing
is really undoable!), ie, just short of mortgaging my soul.

I just made an alias of a printer and put it onto my desktop. Drag/dropped
from Finder window worked fine. But even better was from the open file's
window. That is, I opened an image in GraphicConverter. In the image's main
window, to the left of the name, is an icon. I dragged that icon onto the
alias on my Desktop and it prints. This is using Leopard.

Yep, my DT Printer icon (Epson Stylus) is indeed an alias. But I could
not find a file to alias for my Brother laser printer.

I read this so-called Mac-Tip that you can just print from the desktop,
w/o opening the app, by selecting a file and bringing up the contextual
menu which supposedly has a Print command on it. I have yet to find a
single file of any application that has a contextual menu with a Print
command, however.
