Re: Bruce Schneier - Steal This Wi-Fi

Ian Gregory:

Interesting article from security guru Bruce Schneier, explaining
why he deliberately runs an open wireless network at home for the
benefit of anyone within range who might want Internet access. He
says "To me, it's basic politeness. Providing internet access to
guests is kind of like providing heat and electricity, or a hot
cup of tea."

Kind of makes sense. Schneier's notion of a "guest" differs a bit from
the norm, inasmuch as it includes strangers in cars parked in front of
his house.

Still...

I live in the middle of a 2-acre parcel on a semi-rural (or
sub-sub-suburban) road, so it probably doesn't make much difference
whether I encrypt or not. I have an encrypted 802.11n network for
myself, but I open an 802.11g network when guests are here with their
PowerBooks/MacBooks. The guests are people I know, staying in my
house:>) The unencrypted router is about 250 feet from the road, and I
have been unable to detect it from there with ordinary equipment --
iPhone, PowerBook, MacBook Pro.
