What do you mean "was"? Usenet is still here and is still usable for a
lot of us.
I think he means it has demised as *the* discussion area for internet
users. At one time, Usenet was all there was. Every internet user knew
about it.
Now, I think it's pretty safe to say that the vast majority of internet
users aren't even aware that Usenet exists, and of those that are, they
think it is something hosted by Google.
How many of this group's regular posters have been internet users for
10+ years? I'd guess almost all.
Let's face it, Usenet is no longer the internet discussion area that
everybody knows about and uses. It's an anachronism largely populated
by old internet fogeys. Having said that, I still prefer Usenet to any
web discussion forum.
