I've tried "afp://Macname/diskname" and gotten a message that
"diskname
cannot be found". The disk shows up fine if I try it with my
username/password, but I need it to work for "guest".

I'm pretty sure it's something to do with setting permissions on that
disk, but nothing I've tried has worked.

Do a "get info" on the recalcitrant volume and make sure that the
little
"ignore permissions" box is checked? At the bottom of the info window.
All of our drives show up happily with CMD-K across two machines, one
Tiger one Leopard.

Ignore Ownership is checked

Owner (me) has R&W access

I thought that I had set "Group" to "nobody", but just now it was set to
my shortname. so I unlocked the panel, set it back to "nobody", clicked
the lock, and watched it change back to my username. In fact, I don't
seem to be able to change it to anything else and have it stick.

I think that previously I just changed it and closed the panel, so I
didn't see it change back.

I suppose the problem is related to the inability to change group
permissions on that disk?

Oh, and, "Others" is set to read only.

If "Ignore Ownership" is checked, then no amount of futzing with
permissions is worthwhile. When *any* user accesses that volume, it
would (if memory serves) appear to have their short name as the owner.
When any other user connects, the same. The whole purpose for that
setting is that ownership (both users and groups) is dummied up by the
OS during your session with the disk and not really a permanent thing.

OK, except that "guest" must not be "any user" because the disk does not
show up in that case.

And that is specifically what I want.

Again, you shouldn't have to change the ownership or permissions of the
files on the volume to do what you want. As I've already indicated, all
you need to do is install and use SharePoints.
