Re: Is CompUSA in Madison, WI stll open?

The OP here. Don't quite know where to post this in the thread but I
wanted to thank all of you for your advice and summarise the
resolution: I went to CompUSA today and got my refund. They couldn't
do it over the phone because they said there systems are gradually
shutting down and, even if everyone knows my case, in-store presence
with receipt and credit card is needed. That was fine.

The staff were nice and, quite sincerely it seems, said 730 was a very
good price for a refurb even without warranty and I should consider it.
I explained my viewpoint that it was better match for someone able to
deal with repairs himself which I am not. Without free Leopard, the
effective price is more like $850 anyway and that is within $200 of
Apple's refurb prices, and those include 1 year warranty + are eligible
for Apple Care.

I realize that I may have come close to serious grief, but it is my
understanding that this is not bankruptcy, just an owner closing
stores. Still, good to be out of it.

Although I met some good helpful individuals, I can see from various
goofs that CompUSA was not a well-run store: They didn't know their
stock and more than one employee confirmed availability when there was
none. To make up for that, they promised Apple Care on a machine that
was not eligible. Didn't contact me about my paid-for order until I
called, etc. For all this trouble, when I asked if they could offer
some extra discount on a new AppleCare-eligible imac, nobody there
seemed to have the authority.

Glad you got it resolved.

I popped into the store in the East Bay of SF, the one in Emeryville, which was staffed mostly by dolts from day one. Still is. Plus the sounds their scanners make at the cash register is loud enough to be annoying at the back! Also from day one.

More to the group's focus: they do have 5% discounts on Mac hardware, a far cry from the $600 savings their pr firm touted. The saleschild said they would go to 10% discount, and more after that, if any are left.
