I just made the switch from windows to MAC Leopard. I have become a
heavy user of Remote Desktop in the windows world. I think this it is
a great product and I am able to connect to different machines at work
and from home all across the world. The great thing about the
windows remote desktop is that you can tell it not to show animations,
desktop backgrounds etc and it can speed things up.

I have done the research and I am familiar with VNC and setting it up
using SSH tunnelling. I find it extremely slow.

I have some alternate suggestions below, but first some words
about VNC

Your VNC server and client can affect your performance. The best
suggestion is running TightVNC as your server, since it has very
good compression to get more effective use of your bandwidth.
Chicken of the VNC on the Mac supports the TightVNC protocols.

You can also reduce the number of colors if you do not need them,
which also improves bandwidth usage.

And of course using a smaller display size on the Windows system.

Are there any other alternatives to remote control a mac from a
windows machine?

There is Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection for Mac which you can
download free from Microsoft. It will allow you to access a
Windows system via the RDC protocols.

remotedesktopclient>

And here is a pointer to how you can run multiple RDC sessions at
once

If you want something from the OpenSource world, there is rdesktop
which can install via MacPorts.org or fink.sf.net which may also
require you to install the optional X11 app from the installation
DVD.

Then there are things like LogMeIn.com, NTRconnect.com, TimBukTu
(netopia.com), CoPilot.com, YuuGuu.com
