Finally got my $109 Leopard from Amazon. So far, it's nothing I can use.
It would appear that you upgraded over the top of an existing OS.
That's never a good idea.
Thanks to everyone who responded.
Actually I installed to a separate disc drive. However I am sharing my
home directory, which is a UFS partition, between Tiger and Leopard.
Afterwards I realized that I'm sharing my Dock between the two
installations, hence the Dock corruption.
Steve Maser's Eudora suggestion worked; no more spinning beachballs. As
to why I still use Eudora, I have over 800MB of email (not counting
deleted spam) under management by Eudora, dating back to 1995. I've
never lost an email. Eudora still has better filtering capabilities than
Apple Mail. I haven't used Apple Mail since Jaguar, but my understanding
is that in terms of filtering and searching, Eudora is still better.
I hadn't actually realized that Eudora's no longer a commercial product.
I haven't been hit up by Qualcomm for a paid upgrade in quite a while.
In retrospect I suppose that should have been a clue :-)
I still don't like the visual look of the Leopard windows, but there's
nothing I can do about that. Once I get around to buying CS3, I guess
I'll do my final Leopard installation and move forward. Still, I don't
remember previous Mac OS upgrades being quite as annoying as this one.
