The Leopard DVD is marked as a double layer DVD. This is capable of holding
more data than the ordinary DVD blanks that I have. This leads to the
following questions.

1. Would getting double layer blanks solve the problem.

it is required.

2. Could a backup be made on multiple single layer disks?

it 'could' but it is an enourmous hassle. you'd need to make a disk
image, split it into pieces that fit onto smaller media and then burn
it. to restore, you'd need to read all of the discs, reassemble the
pieces into a full image, and then you are still stuck with ultimately
needing to burn a dual layer disc.

or, you could make a disk image and then remove substantial portions of
osx that you know you won't ever use (such as the various languages),
and hope that you don't inadvertently remove something critical to its
operation. once you slim it down to fit onto a single layer disc
(assuming you can), you can then burn it, and hope that it actually
works.

why do you need to back up the original disc? apple will replace it in
the unlikely event that it gets damaged.

3. How can I tell if my disk burner can handle double layer blanks?

apple system profiler will indicate whether it can write dual layer
discs.

Obviously, because I was able to upgrade to Leopard, my internal DVD reader
can read the double layer DVD even though it cannot burn any DVD blanks at
all. My DVD burner is an external device.

all dvd drives *read* dual layer discs. for burning support, you can
check the manufacturer of the drive and see if it supports dual layer
burn, in addition to checking with apple system profiler.
