Hi.

I'll soon be the lucky owner of two Macintosh computers - a MacBook Pro
and a MacBook. I have a ADSL Modem, and I'd like to set up the computers
to share an internet connection.

I'm not very familiar with MacOS X (my last Mac ran MacOS 9) - I can see
from searching the web that MacOS X support internet connection sharing
by a variety of different ports (at least Ethernet, Firewire and
AirPort). Since I don't have a Firewire cable, nor an AirPort, I'd like
to use Ethernet if I can, but I don't understand how I can connect the
two computers by Ethernet if one has to be connected to the ADSL modem.
Is this possible, or do I need a switch or hub?

Either you use a switch (it's virtually impossible to find a SOHO wired hub
anymore) or you get a second NIC for one machine. Most home routers ship with
a built-in switch.

The ADSL modem has four
Ethernet ports at the back

That means that it has a switch built in. You're golden.

- can I simply plug both computers into the
ADSL modem?

Yep.

If so, do I still enable internet connection sharing?

No. The ADSL unit will have a router and a switch built in.

Or am
I forced to use Firewire or AirPort for the internet connection sharing
if I'm going to connect one of the computers to the ADSL modem by Ethernet?

You just plug the devices in. Same as you would have under OS 9.

bad ASCII art alert...

Typical home network.

S = wall socket

--- = Ethernet cable
M1 = Mac # 1
M2 = Mac # 2
P = network printer
W = Windows box

Thanks for any assistance.
