Internet Connection Sharing Question

Hi.
I'll soon be the lucky owner of two Macintosh computers - a MacBook Pro and a MacBook. I have a ADSL Modem, and I'd like to set up the computers to share an internet connection.
I'm not very familiar with MacOS X (my last Mac ran MacOS 9) - I can see from searching the web that MacOS X support internet connection sharing by a variety of different ports (at least Ethernet, Firewire and AirPort). Since I don't have a Firewire cable, nor an AirPort, I'd like to use Ethernet if I can, but I don't understand how I can connect the two computers by Ethernet if one has to be connected to the ADSL modem. Is this possible, or do I need a switch or hub? The ADSL modem has four Ethernet ports at the back - can I simply plug both computers into the ADSL modem? If so, do I still enable internet connection sharing? Or am I forced to use Firewire or AirPort for the internet connection sharing if I'm going to connect one of the computers to the ADSL modem by Ethernet?
Thanks for any assistance.
