Time Machine - what happens to usb hd

hello,

recently i purchased Leopard (the family pack, because i was
impatient, for those who like to keep score). i havent started using
TM yet because it says it will need to format my external storage to
make use of it. currently the FAT32 volume has stuff on i need, and i
need to access from win machines via the network. needless to say i
havent formatted it yet.

what happens after giving it up to TM? what file system does it use in
the format? i read elsewhere about TM being tied to Leopard's new file
system changes in order to track file diffs, so i imagine it wont be
FAT32 any longer. this leads to questions:

1) can one still use it as non-TM storage?
2) can it be accessed by windows machines via network shares?

thanks,
sm

.
