as a matter of fact i do have APE installed.
couldn't i just dump APE do an upgrade rather than
archive and install?
Yes you can, but it isn't easy, as you can no longer boot into the
system. I've seen mention of a complex process for getting rid of the
various APE components which will then allow Leopard to boot. It
involves the use of typing in commands in single user mode.
apple confirms the problem with 'third-party "enhancement" software',
aka haxies, and offers two solutions:

Right. Looks like MacFixit had more errors in their placement of spaces,
so my revised instructions were still not quite right (extra backslash
and space in two of my "rm" instructions). See Apple's page for the
correct instructions. (I am of course assuming that Apple got it right.)
I'm starting to agree further with MacJournal's opinion of MacFixit.
MacJournal is much too kind.
MacFixit publishes detailed techinical instructions for using "rm" in
single user mode, without warnings that this was potentially dangerous,
and got the pathnames wrong in at least three places.
This is normal for them. Or at least was normal up to the last time I read
that site.
If someone had
actually followed their instructions literally it wouldn't have worked.
It could have been worse. It could have _almost_ worked.
