The first important thing for me are firefox extensions (e.g.
firebug, IE tab etc). Are those extensions system independent?
Yes, they are. The IE tab (if this means IE rendering into
Firefox), no.
What I usually do for double-checking my web designs in IE is to run
Parallels in "coherence" mode with IE executing in the virtual
machine. It's not quite as convenient as running IE (or IE tab) on
Windows, but on the other hand you'd need some sort of VM to have
both IE 6 and IE 7 on the same machine, anyway, whether the host
operating system is Windows or not.
In general, most Firefox extensions do not interact at all with the
operating system, making them completely OS-independent, neglecting
the occasional UI bug. Most extensions that *do* rely on the
underlying operating system have been implemented for both Unix
(including OS X) and Windows systems. IE tab is the notable
exception, of course, because IE only runs on Windows.
