Re: Moving everything to a larger drive

I'm going to get the SE16
750, which is supposed to be relatively high speed and fairly quiet.

High speed? On USB? I think you'll need firewire 400 or 800.
What kind of Mac are you using?

I would like to move _everything_ over to the new drive, excepting the
system-installed software itself. Cookies, web cache, pictures,
installed apps, you name it. Can anyone recommend a procedure or
program for this? I assume, due to privs, that a simple copy will not
work?

Yeah - rename all those files so they are grouped together. Then back
it up. Simple. If some are personal, use a password and compress
them.

Also, does anyone know what the Mac will do with a drive that is only
used periodically for backups? Will the drive be powered down when not
in use? I would definitely like this.

Well unless you live in a fire and theft proof house you would be
crazy to keep it hooked up to the main computer all the time. The
point of a backup is so it doesn't get hit by the 2 most common
tragedies. Fire and theft. Theft is probably the greater risk for
most people. Look at your text files: if they are less than 10 mb
compressed you can email to yourself. Free, offline backup. They
usually compress about 8 to 1. So you can squeeze about 80 mb's of
files into a email message once they're compressed. Or just break it
up. Is email important? Have OS X Mail keep a copy on the POP server
as your backup. And back it up. Users/Library/Mail > compress and
encrypt > email to yourself. There may be other email systems that
allow more than 10 mb but its unusual. www.emailaddresses.com is a
good source. Hope that helps.
