Some browsers allow the user to select whether or not to allow
Java and Javascript to perform certain actions. But I don't think
I've ever seen an option that would make it possible for a script
or applet to change your desktop picture.
IIRC I ran across one that would change your browser home page w/o
asking. A little different, I guess.
Yes, quite different. There's a standard Javascript operation to change
the home page -- many portal sites have a button "Make this your home
page". Since Javascript is designed to script the browser itself, this
is not remarkable. But it's not supposed to have access to other parts
of the system.
