I have a problem with an iMac (2.0GHz PPC running 10.4.10) and need
advice on how to track down the source of a problem.
It will not restart normally (it hangs), but it does start if I do a
Safe Boot (holding down the shift key during startup).
As it boots into Safe Mode but won't boot normally, you almost certainly do
not have a hardware problem. The odds are good that you have some kind of
software corruption. It's probably not directory corruption, which means
possible bad font or bad font cache, or that some plug-in or extension is
bad, or that something that launches on startup is bad. Where exactly does it
hang on startup? If at the blue screen just before the Finder loads, it's
probably an extension or something loading at startup. If earlier, it's
probably fonts or font cache.
FYI, I've already booted from a Tiger install DVD and repaired the disk
to no avail. And I booted into single user mode, where the appropriate
fsck command showed no further need of repairs.
Thought so. If you had directory damage, Safe Boot might not have worked.
I've repaired
permissions while booted from the DVD and while booted into safe mode.
And I've disconnected all peripherals -- keeping only a keyboard and
mouse attached -- to make sure actual connections weren't involved.
Yep, it's not hardware.
Can anyone provide any pointers or suggestions?
TIA,
