Running Mac OS X 10.4.10 on a MacBook Pro 15" (Intel Core Duo)...
When running off the battery: At 40% remaining, the machine goes
black and shuts down completely. There's no warning or low battery
alert. The computer is *not* asleep; a hard reboot is necessary to
bring it back to life.
We have attempted to condition the battery by putting the Mac into
sleep mode until there's no more juice, and then completely recharging
the battery. Despite this, the problem persists.
Does this mean that we need a new battery? Or is something else going
on here?
It certainly sounds like the battery isn't holding a charge as well as it should. I would contact Apple support about this and demand a replacement battery if they cannot tell you how to fix the problem.
