Re: pismo powerbook hangs

The power comes on, the screen lights up, that's it. it will not start
if there is an internal drive connected to the internal bus. If the
drive is disconnected, it will boot from an external. it will not boot
no matter what you do if the internal drive is connected. nothing but a
gray, blank, lit screen. Not EVEN a spinner.

Someone has suggested the PRAM battery. It is just SO dead, but I can
live with screwy dates for the second or two it takes to grab the
current date from the net. I have swapped the logic board (for the
purpose of fixing this problem) and it made no difference.

I have not yet swapped the processor daughter card. I will if anyone
thinks that will make a difference. Could it really be something as
simple as the battery?

I have a 400 mhz pismo powerbook in very good condition. It runs like
a top with an external hard drive, but it hangs at startup with an
internal (any internal, I've tried several, all pulled from various
powerbooks) installed. I've replaced the logic board (assuming this must
be the culprit. a burnt out drive controller perhaps? turned out I was
wrong) and it still hangs. Before I go the trouble of replacing the
processor card, anyone care to offer $.02 as to why this is happening?
it's not like the processor card is so expensive (about $35 dollars) but
I'm sick of swapping parts for negative results. I have new power charge
controller, DC audio card, logic board, etc... What could make the hard
drive hang? The same drives work fine in other computers, and the
computer works fine when booted from firewire.

Is there a connector or ribbon cable between the logic board and the
hard drive that may be bad?

Can you access the internal drive when you start the computer from the
external drive? If so, can you run any diagnostics?
