So all I had to do was add "set non_Xbrowser open" in my .slrnrc

The same mechanism of course also works nicely with mutt, via
urlview. You can also use it with emacs mail and news clients like VM
and gnus.

Yes, my next step was to install urlview and do the same thing with
mutt, that works nicely too.

The only issue is if you ever ssh in to your mac and use these console
applications that way.

I used to run mutt and slrn on a remote Debian shell account and
ssh to that from my Mac (and before I had a Mac, from my solaris
box at work). At that point I used links to view HTML attachments
but hadn't got around to using urlview. With that setup I could
access email and Usenet from anywhere with an ssh client, but the
disadvantage was that I couldn't safely use gnupg because I
didn't want to put my private key on a machine that was not
fully under my control. Now I do everything from home, sitting
in front of my Mac, and I haven't set up port forwarding for
ssh on my router so I can't get into the machine at all when I
am away from home. If I really need to check my email when I am
away (and normally one of the perks of being away is that I have
a total break from the Internet) then I use the web interface to
my mail server. I also always let my machine sleep when I am
not using it and I don't really want to leave it running for
the rare occasions when I might want to connect remotely.

But I can see how your script would be really useful for some
people.
