How does one get the meta key to work in Terminal or iTerm?

Hi,

Does anyone know how to make the meta key work on the mac in a
terminal? Alt or the Apple key would be a fine solution but I can't
seem to find how to do it. I googled around and experimented with
encodings and mapping in the terminal profiles preferences, without
succes.

I'd like to use the GNU readline library shortcuts in the bash shell
( http://tiswww.case.edu/php/chet/readline/rluserman.html ) and some
of the really handy ones like "Meta-Backspace" for a backwards word
kill are inaccessible, Ctrl-w does work as an alternative but that's
confusing when switching back and forth between Mac OS X and other
systems.

Anyway, if anyone has a solution or a hint I'd be very very grateful!

kind regards,
