The problem I'm having is no one computer has the latest, most updated
info as I work on both of them, so using one as the main to sync off
of won't work. I'm confusing myself but not knowing where the most
updated files are. I can't find bookmarks because I'm on the wrong
computer at the time etc....
What is the best way to do this and can .mac help??
Thanks for any ideas helping me stay organized!!
Kate
My first thought was something involving rsync [1], but I think that
might be needlessly complex and generally overkill for what you want.
If it's just documents that you need to keep updated, could you do
something as simple as using your .Mac iDisk instead of your local
Documents folders, to save your works-in-progress? Assuming you have
relatively fast internet connections and don't work with very large
files, you could just keep everything there, and be able to access it
from all your machines quite easily.
Your browser bookmarks in Safari should automatically be kept in sync
via .Mac (if you have it turned on in the .Mac preference pane).
Unfortunately, it won't sync Firefox bookmarks. If you prefer Firefox as
a browser, Google Browser Sync [2] is the way to go. (Requires that you
sign up for a username/account with Google, but allows you to encrypt
your bookmarks and other data to keep it private.)
If you did both of those things (use your iDisk for documents, use .Mac
sync or GBS for browser bookmarks), would that satisfy most of what you
need?
There are certainly other ways to keep multiple computers in sync, but
they tend to all have their drawbacks, either in flexibility or
complexity. If you can modify your workflow to keep your documents in a
central location (on your iDisk or some other file server), it'll
probably be a lot easier.
