I am looking at getting a new MacBook. One of the choices to make is
between a 250Gb 4200rpm drive or a 160GB 7200 rpm drive. Given the
overall speed of the machine, what sorts of applications would
actually perform differently on the two systems?
Get the 5400 RPM drive (there is no 7200 RPM option) if you're going to
be capturing and editing video.
Actually, there is now. From the Apple Store, it is a $150 add-on:
* 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
* 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm [Add $150]
* 250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 4200 rpm [Add $150]
But your point is understood, I think. I do minimal video capture
(stills yes, audio capture yes) and don't play any games, so faster
drive access isn't going to do a whole lot for me?
