I know that optical media cannot be relied upon for more than a few
years.
What should I back them up onto for longest life ? Tape ?
I have a similar problem, though not so many movies...
I'm thinking about getting a 1TB HD, probably Lacie. I've found that
using Handbrake with 2-pass h264 I can barely tell the difference
between a 1GB rip and the original DVD, unless it's an exceptionally
good DVD recording, which most aren't. So even 500GB drive would hold
close to 500. With a terabyte you could have 2GB movies.
As time goes by you might need to transfer to some new medium, but I
think HDs will be around for a while yet.
