X-11 does an abysmal job with fonts. If you want to use OOo on the Mac,
use NeoOffice. Because NeoO uses the Java interface, it handles fonts
properly. Also, Linotype FontExplorer X is free and vastly superior to
Font Book.

If you Google comp.sys.mac.* over the last few years, you should find
quite a lot on the best way to set up fonts in X.

Overview of what works for most people:
* Leave System/Library/Fonts alone
* Create a folder in Shared called Fonts, Shared Fonts, or whatever.
* Strip _all_ fonts from these locations, placing them in Shared Fonts
(You can organize them by type, PostScript, TrueType, etc., and/or
alphabetically if you want):
/Library/Fonts/
~/Library/Fonts/
/Library/Application Support/<various companies and/or apps>/Fonts
(see important exception below)
inside app packages
e.g. /Applications/NeoOffice.app/Contents/share/fonts
* Make sure permissions on Shared Fonts are set so all fonts can be
opened (read) by anyone
* Install a professional-grade font manager (that's not Font Book)
* Import and organize fonts in the font manager
* Restart your computer to make sure the font manager automatically
launches

*** Important Exception: If you remove the Adobe Indesign (Creative
Suite) fonts from App Support, InDesign will go buggerup because certain
fonts _must_ reside in App Support when InDesign starts up. If you want
to use the supplied CS fonts with other apps, _duplicate_ them in Shared
Fonts and activate them as necessary in the other apps. _Deactivate_
them before launching InDesign to minimize conflicts.

I have no idea where M$ Office hides its fonts since I refuse to use it.
