Common problem, easy fix. The backup (PRAM) battery may be dead. Dead
PRAM batteries are responsible for all kinds of funky startup weirdness.
The battery in a G4 is a 3.6v, 1/2AA lithium battery. They are
approximately $10 at Radio Shack, and fit in a rectangular black plastic
battery holder on the surface of the logic board.
