All I can offer is how I do the same thing as you apparently want to do.

in order to preserve as much simplicity as possible. ;-)
I bought a twin pack of Timbuktu, which set me back about $200 as I
recall.
Threw one copy on my 7 year old Pismo, threw the other copy on my brand
new MacBook Pro.
Everything worked just ducky, with minimum strain on my brain.
Very expensive approach, however, so if your synapses are still
snapping, you might be better off with another approach.
