Re: How to "wipe" ALL Mac file's slack space?

Blocks

When this term is used with the Mac filesystem, it refers to what Mark
will call a cluster, a term probably more familiar to PeeCee users than
Mac users.

Who said anything about block being used with the filesystem?

Block _is_ used with dd, for example, as in the dd option "bs".

[snip]

A cluster is a fixed size, determined by the file system; with the NTFS
system used by Intel Macs, the default cluster size is 4KB.

Intel Macs use the HFS+ filesystem, not NTFS.

I stand corrected, thanky; I already knew that but most of my neurons
are nuked, and most of my synapses are not snapping.

FWIW what I _meant_ to say was "The filesystem of the BootCamp created
partition used by Vista on a Mac computer."

....but had I said that, some overly critical person might have accused
me of too much verbosity.

Slack space
***********
The part of the last 4KB cluster space that is NOT used by a file.

I.e. the difference between Get Info's size on disk and the
parenthesized content size.

That also, yes.

So, in conclusion, what is "slack space" in that "Small TextEdit" file
is ALL the space in the cluster that is unused, except the 3 bytes that
are used for that one word "Boo". In the case of that tiny file, over
4,090 bytes of slack space are available for snoopers to look at.

Which is why I secure delete my sensitive files.

That is a good idea.

As I posted, my only interest in slack space is to improve the
compression of my backup files.

Your verbosity astounds me.

You could use a bit more verbosity in your posts, a lot of what you post
leaves out critical details, at least for the more mentally challenged
dolts like me.
