[responding to the request to have a keystroke which clears the desktop]

Now all you have to do is:

Under finder select: Preferences... >> General and uncheck everything
under "Show these items on the Desktop".

Then hide the dock and your desktop should be completely cleared.

Unfortuntely that doesn't work, at least for me. I'm running OS X 10.4.10
on
an Intel based MacBook Pro. The icons on the desktop, other than those for
drives and such, remain.

I think you misunderstood the OP. Quoted:

Is it possible to temporarily clear the desktop completely
in order to view the underlying image unobstructed?

Nothing about having to have a keystroke which clears the desktop.

It is easy to "...view the underlying image unobstructed". The OP later
posted:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I decided to just put all my desktop stuff in a folder
and keep it in the dock.

I just arranged the icons in the folder the same way
they were arranged on my desktop.

I pop the folder open when i need access to docs there.

It's so simple, i don't know why I didn't think of it
before.

Which you sniped from above. So, by putting all your desktop stuff in a
folder in the dock, uncheck everything under "Show these items on the
desktop" in the finder preferences, and hiding the dock; you should be
able to "view the underlying image unobstructed". It works for me.

You are correct that I misunderstood the quote I commented on. I think I took
the response I copied out of context and thought that the comment was
suggesting that by deselecting all of the items in the "display" list would
achieve the desired result of leaving the desktop clear of any icons.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
