Re: G5 imac parts into a G4 sawtooth?

My 20 inch G5 imac (bought in late 2004) started turning itself off randomly, then refusing to boot in anything but target mode. I took it into the dealer, who said "the logic board is failing" and it would cost $1000 to replace it, which seems excessive to me when I can get a new dual core for about $2000 (I'm in Australia).

I am currently using my kid's G4 sawtooth with a studio display, running Tiger, and was wondering if there is anything I can salvage from the G5 imac to use in the G4 sawtooth? I know the memory and airport card are not compatible, but what about the HD (160GB serial ATA) and combo drive? Can the sawtooth even recognize a 160GB HD?

I would appreciate any salvage advice on this as it seems a waste to just chuck the imac in the trash as the "approved repairer" thinks I should do. Thanks for your time and thoughts, guys.

Hi. I somehow doubt that you could use an eSata drive in an older machine, same for memory etc. Repairing it or selling it non-operating on eBay might the only only real options.

What part of Australia are you in?

I know a guy there who is semi-retired and actually does very fast and competent "board level" repairs rather than board swaps. He has been in digital electronic/IT since the seventies and is very good but is located in Queensland. He repaired some marine electronics gear (Radar) for me a year or two back after several experts had proclaimed it irreparable. He wasn't very expensive either. He charged me au$320.00 against a new replacement cost of $11,000.00 plus. He is a friend of my in-laws (my wife is Australian).

If you reply to me at the hotmail address in my headers I can forward you his contact details and you can chat to him about it. He works with both Macs and PCs and so might be able to help.
