n Migration Assistant on the new iMac, will there be an icon of the contents of my old drive that I can click on to choose the entire contents of that drive to transfer globally (minus anything the Assistant automatically in its wisdom deems as unnessary or harmful)?

Or do I have to laboriosly choose various folders to copy, such as my Desktop folder, my Robert Folder, my Applications folder, my TIFF projects folder (which is inside my work projects folder and also needs to be transferred), my Macintosh HD drive contents?

First it asks which user or users to migrate; it's a matter of check boxes. Then you're asked whether you want to migrate applications, files & folders (from the root level, not from the user), or both. If you migrate either or both, you have to migrate the root library as well. If you uncheck both, you then have the option of migrating the library or not.

Thanks, Michele. Which of those options do you recommended?

You then get to choose network settings, time zone information, and/or sharing settings.

If there is a user account with the same name, you get the option of renaming the user account you're transferring, replacing the existing account with it, or not transferring the account at all.

All the above is when running MA as a stand-alone app; I don't recall what happens if you're migrating through the setup assistant.

When Setup Assistance automatically starts, is it okay to quit and open Migration Assistant instead?
