Hmmm. The second time you say "in the past" you qualify it with "under
Windows." Is that the same "past" the first time? I've done video
recording to a bus-powered 2.5" FireWire drive on a G3 iBook without
losing meaningful data. If you're having issues just recording sound any
anything better than that, I'd suggest you have a deeper issue to look
into and a RAM disk is just a band-aid.
"In the past" means under Windows.
So you're looking for a solution to a problem that you don't know the
Mac has?
I have disabled unnecessary (to audio recording) services such as
wireless networking, screen savers, etc., and given the audio program
high priority. I need to throw every potential remedy at the problem
as I am using hired voice talent and retakes are expensive. The one
thing I'm not doing is recording to, say, a 7200 RPM external hard
drive via firewire.
Me either. The one I did video to was a 4500 RPM. I've also done it to
internal drives in shorter spurts.
Instead I'm planning to use the MacBook's internal
5400 RPM drive and have Audacity save its temporary files to the RAM
disk. The audio clips are well under a minute each, not very big.
Various recommendations I have read say audio recording should not be
done to the boot disk; I imagine this is to avoid conflicts in reading
and writing to the swap file.
Shouldn't happen. Before you bring in your hired talent, spend some time
working with the equipment and see if you can force the glitch you're
spending time trying to prevent.
