I bought a dual 800 quicksilver off of ebay. One 80bg hd. It's loaded
with OS 10.2, but no installaton disks.
Yuck. Mac OS X 10.2 is ancient. I'd definitely not bother running that unless it's your last option. = )
I've also bought another 80 gb hd, and a set of OS 10.3 full
installation disks.
Mac OS X 10.3 is better, but not nearly as good as 10.4. ; )
I'm hoping to be able to install the new hd, load the OS for a fresh
install, and reformat the old drive to use it for storage purposes.
I'm fairly comfortable working on pc's, but this mac is totally new to
me. If any would be willing to offer suggestions on the best way to
achieve what I"m trying to accomplish it'd be greatly appreciated.
Here are the basics of how to do what you want:
Put the Mac OS X 10.3 CD into the CD drive. Then shut down the Mac.
Pop the side panel open, and you'll see that the hard drives are installed along the bottom of the case. Hopefully the previous owner left one or more free hard drive trays in place for you to mount the new hard drive next to the existing hard drive.
You probably want to configure the ATA/IDE jumpers on the drive as "Slave".
A single screw holds each tray in place. Once the screw is removed, the try should slide out towards you. Mount the new hard drive to the tray. Then slide the tray, with drive attached, back in place and put the screw back in to secure it into place.
Now hold down the C key on the keyboard while powering up the Mac. It should boot off the CD. Once the installer is running, look in the menu bar at the top of the screen for "Disk Utility". Use Disk Utility to format the new hard drive as HFS Extended. Then Quit Disk Utility to install Mac OS X 10.3 onto the newly-formatted drive.
