ok Ive made some progress, I only get the second ip address when I
turn on Internet Sharing,
why does the mac need 2 IP addresses rather than the normal one ?
How else would the Mac share its internet connection with another
computer?
Ah... are you sure about that? Routers kinda need at least two different
networks in order to route, it's kinda like a defining feature. Setting up an
internet sharing connection means doing two things:
1 setting up a DHCP server (optional, but desirable)
2 setting up a router. (absolutely required)
You have to have _two_ networks, one public (the Internet) and one private
(your home net) with the DHCP service on the private net. And that means that
your machine will have two IP, one public, one private.
What I find interesting about your connection is that
1 you have two IPs on the same NIC, something I thought was impossible unless
you deliberately set that up
2 both IPs are private IPs
What commands did you issue to the NIC? Did you do any IP Forwarding or
anything similar? What you have is NOT normal behaviour for internet sharing.
