Retrospect
can do Macintosh _or_ Windows tape backups using client/server. So,
AFAICT, you'll need two backups systems with MacOS X--one for MacOS and
one for Windows.
No that's not correct. I back up both Windows and Mac systems to tape
with Retrospect here at home and it works well.
Interesting. There's no mention of that feature on the EMCsignia (aka
Dantz) web site. They sell either a MacOS-based Retrospect or a
PC-based Retrospect.
That would be the *host*. They sell the Mac- or Windows-hosted Retrospect Desktop/Workgroup/Server. Depending on which you purchase (Desktop, Workgroup, or Server), a different number of clients is supported.
There's no mention that you can backup both.
It's just common knowledge, I suppose.
Retrospect for Mac OS supports backup clients on classic Mac OS, Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows:

Which system is your "server"?
It's currently running on a Mac mini G4 sitting in my closet:

How do you do a "bare metal" restore on
each system?
You'll have to describe exactly what you mean by "bare metal restore" for me to be able to answer that question.
