I recently purchased a Mac Pro tower w/ OSX... 2x Intel Core Duo
2.66Ghz, 3GB Ram. I am installing 2x250GB SATA drives and I want to
install a RAID 0 stripe for performance reasons...
Is there any way to set it up using Hardware RAID instead of Software
RAID?
Why is hardware RAID preferred?
For performance reasons... I am using it to recall video and graphics
for presentations. I would prefer to use a hardware controller if it
is available.
Well I guess the place to start is to purchase a SATA hardware RAID
controller and go from there.
I guess I need to re-word my question... Does the Mac Pro support
Hardware RAID without purchasing an additional RAID controller? Every
PC I have set up that uses SATA has Hardware RAID available in the
BIOS. Does the Mac Pro offer this utility without using the OS?
Apple support will have the authoritative answer, of course. Barring that, AFAIK hardware RAID is not implemented / supported on Macs with Xeon chip sets at this time.
I think I would try it with a software RAID first. It's possible it will perform fine for your needs.
