Re: Is it possible to update MAC OS8.1 with 8.6 ?

Probably not. There were several versions of the 8.6 CD. The most common one
was an upgrade to MacOS 8.5. A smaller version of the same update was
available for download from many ftp sites. It is still available for
download from Apple directly.

The difference is that the CD contained updates for other programs
besides the operating system itself.

The CD could not be booted and did not have a useable operating system on it.

It would only update a working MacOS 8.5 system.

There was also a bootable 8.6 CD. It was only sold with certain computers.
The operating system on the CD would not boot if copied to a hard drive, you
had to use the installer which actually installed 8.5 and then applied the
update in one combined process.

I have never actually seen one, so I don't know if it could be used for
any other computer than the one intended. If it could, then you could
use it to go directly from 8.1 to 8.6.

A third CD was called a "system restore CD". It also had an 8.6 CD only
system on it. It did not have an installable system on it, it contained
a mountable disk image of a complete disk with an installed system
and several installed application programs.

They were tailored for the computers they were sold with, so it may not
boot another type of system. Games were configured only for the video
configuration and AppleWorks 5, which was included on some of them, was
PPC only, the commercial CD was both PPC and 680x0.

Assuming that your computer could boot the CD and run the installed
system on it, you could update your 8.1 system by copying the system
file from the disk image to your hard drive. You would loose your
preferences and any extensions, control panels, etc. Probably not a good
idea, but better than nothing.

Note that 8.5/8.6 is PPC only it will not work on a 680x0 system. You should
also check the memory requirments, it requires more RAM and hard disk
space than 8.1. Since it is PPC only it is significantly faster than
8.1.
