It's always very difficult o adise myfrien over the phone, as the isn't
precise enough.
For instance, she has run into a problem with some files when using
Spotlight, but I don't know whether she is using the window that comes
up when you click the icon in the menu bar or the full window.
Anyway, she says that when she tries to open certain files from
Spotlight, she gets an error mesage "I/O error".
What's going on? I wondered if an alias had got disconnected from its
file. But probably it's something else, any suggestions would be useful.
What type of Mac is she using?
Does your friend start up on an internal hard drive?
Are the problem files on the startup drive or an external drive?
If they are on an external drive, how is it connected to the Mac (USB, Firewire, etc.)?
I/O Error usually means the hard drive is not functioning correctly. This can indicate that there is a serious problem with the hard drive hardware, or that blocks have gone bad on the drive and it needs a reformat, or any number of problems with the hard drive directory.
Advise your friend to run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and Verify the hard drive to see if any errors are reported. If errors are reported, your friend will need to boot from a Mac OS X install CD/DVD and run Disk Utility from there to Repair the drive.
