Create wifi subnet with a user-supplied SSID on an iMAC?

This all for an iMac running OS X 10.4.9

I have a wifi network with SSID "NETGEAR", 192.168.0/24, used to
connect to the 'Net.

When drunk last week I ordered a wireless SB3 to use to stream music
from my iMac to my HiFi. Much better than swapping CDs.

I don't want to use my "NETGEAR" network for this to improve security
and reduce bandwidth contention. Also, so that I don't depend on the
NETGEAR device for this all to work.

So, with a little help from this group I created another alias on en1,
set up with the manual IP 10.0.1.1/16, router entry left empty. Below,
192.168.1.7 is the SB3.

netstat -nr

1185
192.168.1.8 127.0.0.1 UHS 0 6 lo0

However, at no point have I had the opportunity to create a SSID of my
own. Is it possible to do this?

Some system info because it might be relevant, and because I think the
system_profiler command is cool.
