Re: VOIP dialers for Mac

Websites like http://voipcheap.com and http://voipbuster.com and
http://adcalls.com offer some interesting long distance options.
However for some reason their dialers are only Windows based. I was
wondering if anyone has found a similar system that is OS X
compatible. If not, is there any reason why I couldn't use a Virtual
PC based program to run one of these?

There are several freeware SIP softphones for the Mac. Vonage offers one
to existing customers as an option. I think they charge you for it, but
you get a phone number for your computer and then can use it call home
(if that's where your ATA is) for free.
There are other providers such as BroadVoice, SunRocket etc, that
will work with SIP phones.
Skype works pretty well too. Skypeout is not wonderful and the latest
version of the program requires a G4 or later, but it is free.

Not since Jan 1. PC to PC with Skype is great. Unfortunately very
few people use Skype compared to MSN and Yahoo. And of those, very
few have a mic handy. Its hard to get people to adapt another form of
communication. We like our phones.

Vonage and other VOIP companies are very different from the websites
mentioned above. They do cost a fraction of the VOIP companies but
they are only for outgoing, long distance calling.

Whatever you will do, you will need a proper headphone. Some Macs require
special microphones (with built in amplifiers) or a USB headset. There
is a very common Chinese USB telephone that is sold under many brands.
It uses a driver called "SkypeMate" which is availble for the Mac.

There is also a driver for a popular SIP softphone for it, and Skype,
SkypeMate, the softphone and driver can be downloaded for free.

Actually everything I can throw at my Mini works great. After
adjusting the input level controls in System Preferences, Sound of
course. Of course with the PPC Mini, I need to use the iMic.
