Iv got a home network, with a firewall, and a WPA password, but I have
a feeling somebody is one my network. here's why;

When i click on the wireless symbol in the menu bar sometimes i have a
computer-to-computer network. the name of it is; WASC-0016410286e1-
phillips

i do not have any phillips laptop or desktop in my house....

However, this computer to computer network is only there sometimes, it
is there for a few minutes and goes away, but then it comes back again
a few minutes later

BTW, what is a computer to computer network?

what can i do about this, shall i change my password or something???
have they got access to my files etc....

That wireless symbol on your menu bar tells you all the *networks* that are in range. One of your neighbors has a computer broadcasting a computer-to-computer network.

In my neighborhood, since the end of November, I have seen, in addition to my home network:

6 different networks called "wireless", with no security (different MAC numbers, different days); 3 networks called "linksys", 2 with no security; 5 networks in the 2WIREXXX family, all with security enabled; 1 network named after the family who maintains it, with security; and, a new one called "Free Public WiFi", with no security, popped up briefly on Thursday.

Most of these bounce in and out, as I or a neighbor opens a door. None of them has ever had a strong enough signal for me to use. I would assume that my network occasionally pops into range for one of my neighbors, but, if they don't have my password, the likelihood that they'd glom onto mine instead of one of the 6 "wireless" networks seems pretty slim.

In my denser old neighborhood I had 23 WiFi networks consistently in range, 21 of which were WEP enabled, none WPA, and 2 open.

Here in my less dense neighborhood I get strong signals from 8 networks, all WEP enabled, none WPA or open.
