Re: Photo viewers

In Photoshop, I seem to spend half
my time closing those dialogue boxes that always seem scattered all
over the screen using up valuable window space.

Just how small *is* your monitor??

Actually an average quality 19" LCD 1280x1024 4:3.

I'll admit 1280x1024 is rather constrained for graphics work. Is that
the native resolution for that 19" LCD?

Yep. Only the high end 19" would use anything higher. There's a 20"
thats 1450 x 1050 (I think) that I might try. Its very reasonably
priced. Or an 22" widescreen (1650 x 1050).

I was thinking that it would be neat to get 2 widescreens and mount
them on top of each other. Then it would be more like a square,
requiring the viewer's eyes less area to roam. It might be great for
reading too if you split the screen. I guess it might be difficult to
mount as looking through Flickr widescreen multi-monitor pictures
didn't turn up a single one and there were a lot there. Dual mount
LCD arms are expensive. Often more than one of the monitors.

It never remembers
anything I did before. Maybe I need to set up a template.

What in the world are you talking about? Photoshop absolutely remembers
the positions of each palette each time you restart it. Most folks who
use Photoshop regularly align all the palettes on the right side of the
screen with the exception of the tools palette, which is on the left
side. I believe that's the default configuration.

Any way of getting it to remember the last screen setup? Like with no
message boxes?

I'm not sure what you mean by message boxes.

The little windows on the right (color, history, etc) and the long
vertical one on the left. But no matter, as soon as I open a photo
and Fit on Screen, its on top of them. Strangely, when I close that
photo window, they are gone. Its looking better now. I don't know why
I never ran across this before.

Every time I open it, I have to do the same thing over
and over - hide all the little windows that are cluttering up the
screen. Maybe there is something I can set.

First of all, what particular version of Photoshop are we talking about
here? Did you buy it as part of Adobe CS, CS2, or is it stand-alone?
What's the version number?

7.0

Photoshop should remember the position of each palette when you quit
it. If not, then perhaps Photoshop is crashing each time you quit it,
before it has a chance to save the positions. I suppose you might look
to see if there is a crash log in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter or
/Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter.

It says:
Adobe Photoshop 7.0(1495,0xa000ed88) malloc: *** Deallocation of a
pointer not malloced: 0x907136b0; This could be a double free(), or
free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting
environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug

Its repeated MANY times.

The tools palette is usually positioned near the top-left corner of the
screen. People rarely hide this palette since it's so commonly needed.

Actually its good that its below the photo. Its hidden yet easily
accessible. Command_` is your friend.

The individual palettes listed in the Photoshop Windows menu contain
different settings that you use while editing images. Those are best
positioned along the right side of the screen. They will snap to each
other so that they align with each other.

OK. Looking good.
