Re: Is Mac booting from ext hard drive really "necessary"?

I am fairly certain you are correct about the booting problem.

At least that is what all the "MVP" types in the Windows NGs inform me,
they say that Windows will not boot from any removable drive, the CD/DVD
drive being the one exception, and _that_ only applies the the CD/DVD
drive that is built into the computer, I believe.

MVP is some kind of "honor" that Microsoft confers on some of the more
helpful and skilled posters in those NGs.

I used to think it stood for hundreds of "Microsoft Vice Presidents",
but they tell me it stands for "Microsoft Valuable Person"...

....or "Microsoft Valuable Poster", I forget which.

There are a few perks that come with the award, and they also have to
sign a non-disclosure agreement before Microsoft will "honor" them with
the award.

That award is time sensitive, lasts only for a period of time. If the
MVP is a bit too critical of Microsoft, he will get his honorary title
revoked.

The MVP people are the unpaid arm of Microsoft, they answer a lot of the
dumb questions in the Windows NGs that are posed by Windows users, such
as:

"I pulled off one of the stickers on my PC, and now it won't boot,
PLEASE HELP !!!"

Actually, the run of the mill questions are not quite that bad, but
there are a fair amount of repeat questions, about registry problems,
about the OS refusing to function after some minor hardware repair,
about driver problems and unexplained OS slowdowns.

The "advice" from the MVPs often takes the this form:

"See your system administrator or IP professional, he will clear up
your Airport connection problem for you"

....and the cow-like Windows droids accept this "advice", as being the
normal way of solving their various problems.

Mac users are much more inclined to solve their own problems.

Paid "advisors" would starve if they relied on Mac customers.

OT, I am really impressed with Parallels (build 3188). I have both
Windows XP Pro and Vista Ultimate installed on my 15" MacBook.

My main 32 GB internal boot partition only uses 7 GB of files right now,
so still a lot of space left to install other Mac stuff.

I store those two "Virtual Machine" files on a non-bootable data
partition on the same internal physical drive. Those VM files occupy
about 8.5 GB of space, 7 GB for the Vista file, 1.5 GB for the XP file.

Storing the VM files on a separate data-only partition probably slows
down Parallels somewhat, because the drive heads have to waste time
bouncing back and forth between the two different partitions.

....but at least it keeps my boot partition from getting clogged up.

Think I will add about a dozen more OSs to my MacBook, various flavors
of Unix and Linux.<g>

Is this fun or what! :) :) :)

There seems to be a fair amount of bitching and complaining about
Parallels in the Parallels forums, but I have not run into any problems
yet - - - probably because I am not "pushing" parallels.

There is yet another much more costly simulation app' due to be
available relatively soon, I think in the $200 to $300 range.

I forget the name of that upcoming app' however, or when it might become
available.
